3 Hurt at Chicago's Union Station

By DAVE CARPENTER, Associated Press Writer

CHICAGO (AP) - Three people were wounded when shots were fired Tuesday at Union Station, the city's landmark rail hub, police said.

One officer at the scene, who refused to give his name, said the three wounded people included a police officer.

Police cars, ambulances and fire vehicles were at the entrance to the downtown station, which is the site of commuter and Amtrak rail lines.

An Amtrak worker said the shootings happened at about 1:15 p.m.

``I was going out on my lunch ... and all of a sudden about 25 men were running and screaming, `They're shooting!' They knocked me down,'' said Peter Noto, a passenger service agent.

``I heard gunshots all over the place,'' he said.

Amtrak spokeswoman Debbie Hare said the train company evacuated people from the area of the station where the shootings took place.

She said she was told that three people were shot, and two were seriously wounded.

Union Station is a massive, ornate reminder of the era when railroads were king. It was the setting for an action scene in the movie ``The Untouchables.''
