General News - December 2001 / January 2002

26/1/2002

  • A foreign TV company visited our railway in January, filming for a German programme.
  • Ferrymead Station has been repainted in a brown/orange colour scheme which is representative of the colours of the early 20th century. The station was last repainted in 1988. The interior is now being painted.
  • The Ferrymead Station home signal is also to be painted and repainted semaphore arms have been installed. A fence is now being constructed around the station garden.
  • The trackwork into the Locomotive Shelter has been completed. This includes lifting and packing on the main road in which had twisted badly. Fell centre rail on the east side of the shelter has been removed to make a display elsewhere. With a reshunt of the shelter it is now almost exclusively occupied by the DTG's vehicles.
  • The Railway will operate every Saturday and Sunday in February. WD 357 will be taken out of service at the end of February when the boiler ticket expires. Other steam locomotives (CB and possible foreign options) will fill in until after the Easter festival.
  • The Kalamazoo trolley is being overhauled in preparation for a "trolleython" expected to take place in March. A new trolley stand has been built at Ferrymead Station.
  • Weeds have been sprayed along the tracks with our new weedsprayer. Also, gorse and other weeds have been cut back at Ferrymead Station and other parts of the site with the weedcutter which is working again (thanks to Ray Shearman).
  • The refurbishment of A 1825 Vice Regal Carriage is progressing well. At the present time a wall is being built to close in the attendants cabin. Electrical rewiring has been carried out and other work is continuing.
  • DE 1429 operated on the roster on January 26th. The DE will be running again on February 23rd.
  • The Electric section are applying for a resource consent to erect the electric overhead wires to Ferrymead Station. Their safety system for LTSA is nearly completed.
