OCTOBER 2000

The commissioning of the heritage train has had to be deferred owing to additional work required on the boiler of D 140, and to insufficient progress on D 26. The train was to have been commissioned on December 9, 2000, but a new date has been tentatively set for the Easter weekend in 2001.

MARCH 2000

D 140: The cylinders were recently lifted onto the frames. The next big job is to manufacture new side tanks, and work has started measuring up the old tanks which will be used as patterns. The boiler is to be inspected by the boiler inspector before it is retubed for the hydraulic test, and requires a crack in the steam dome to be repaired. The loco cylinders and valve gear are presently being machined.

F 78: Side guards doors awaiting painting and glazing. Floor sanded and varnished.

F 79: Being assessed for restoration. Some materials on hand. Purchase of timber being calculated.

FEBRUARY 2000

D 140: The boiler has been sandblasted and primed as part of the preparation for inspection and hydraulic testing. It has now re-entered the workshop for further preparatory work. As some will know the boiler was a longtime resident of the workshop in the 80s when the D was under restoration then.

F 79: Has now entered the workshop and restoration is underway.

D 26: Has left the workshop and returned to the carriage shed. Work may continue if funding becomes available later.

JANUARY 2000

D 140: The boiler has been placed on a wagon and moved to the workshop area to be prepared for an inspection. It is to be sandblasted as part of the preparation for this important step. The boiler is currently missing all the tubes but a set of these is on hand and will be fitted. A new smokebox has been made.

DECEMBER 1999

D 140: is back on its wheels for the first time in many years. As many members will know, 140 has been a feature of the workshop for a number of years with its dismantled frame sitting at the back of the pit road while various aspects were worked on. Now, after the completion of bearing work, the D is at last mobile again. The front axle has been refitted, headstocks and inside valve gear installed. The next big task awaiting the restorers is the boiler.

F 79: Has been moved out of the carriage shed and will be put into the workshop for restoration.

LB 3409: Has been moved out of the carriage shed and will be put into the workshop for restoration.

JULY 1999

D 140: Cylinders removed from underframe. Valves and assembly being reconditioned. Springs sent to blacksmith. Piston guide bars being machined. Guide bar slippers being cast. Westinghouse pump under overhaul.

F 78: Repainted in red colours. Ends painted mahogany, corner posts black, hand grabs white. Luggage doors refitted. Locks, hand grabs, loading, number and class plates to be fitted.
