LB 4803 Full Restoration Report

29/10/2001

This vehicle is near completion with only the wheels and axleboxes to be checked. The underframe was in good condition, although the handbrake end headstock was doubtful so was replaced. The central drawgear coffin plate rest was replaced. The Westinghouse brake pipe and end fittings on this non-airbraked wagon were examined and repaired where necessary.

Four end stanchions were replaced as were five new end boards, six sideboards and two door boards. Four interior metal side bracing straps were refitted. Corner angle metal stops were repaired and secured. Handgrabs, door locking devices and door hinges were overhauled and refitted. All long protruding bolts were trimmed to required safety standard. Handbrake was overhauled. Floor was 10% repaired and all floor was spot renailed.

Paintwork interior and exterior was sanded down. All ironwork was rustproof sealed. All bodywork was primed, undercoated and topcoated with two coats of Canterbury Red (Indian Red) paint and all ironwork was painted black. Member Kevin Holland has prepared and finished this wagon to a very high standard, far beyond its old condition when in its working life on NZR.
