F 13 Overhaul Commences

25/4/00

The overhaul of F 13 began on Friday 21 April. Dismantling of the locomotive began with the help of Mainline Steam's hydraulic crane which arrived on its own wagon in the preceding week. The overhaul, which is part of the locomotive's 10 year survey, requires the locomotive to be completely stripped down and dismantled. F 13 was restored to running condition in 1984, and fell due for the overhaul in 1994. Due to pressure of other work, the loco was put to one side, but it was granted a temporary boiler ticket for the Waipara Vintage Festival in September 1999. The overhaul will be carried out alongside the restoration of D 140 by using a second work team. Early in June the underframe was lifted off its wheels, and the boiler was treated with an acid solution to remove scale buildup.
