DTG's DG 772 In The Body Shop

20/1/2001

The Diesel Traction Group's DG 772 is having panel repairs done. The last time that work of this type was done was in 1987 - 88 when it was painted up for Ferrymead 125. Due to the design of the locomotives, panelwork in the cab and nose areas tends to rust out. Another troublesome area is around the battery boxes where leaking acid eats away the metal. A number of panel sections have been cut out and new pieces welded in. The battery boxes have also been cleaned out and derusted.

Also planned this year is a major effort to complete the restoration of DI 1820. The DI has been under restoration almost since it arrived at Ferrymead, but has languished in the last few years due to a lack of manpower. After several years in the doldrums the Group's fortunes have improved as several expatriate members have returned from distant parts of NZ and the world.
