Signalling Upgrade Proceeding At Moorhouse

25/8/00

The Ferrymead Railway signals section has been very busy in recent months upgrading signalling equipment around the Moorhouse yard. Early this year, repairs were completed to the location box by the switchlock, which was hit by an overgauge load on a wagon. The next job was to remove the signalling equipment from the crossing keepers' hut so that the building could be repaired. The crossing alarms at Clem's Crossing have also been inoperative for some months. The alarms are now working again with new cabling being laid in a concrete duct. Another major job nearing completion has been the replacement of all the control rodding for the branch and loop points by the signalbox. All the existing cranks and rollers have had to be dug out of the ground and replaced by new ones on concrete bases. Because of this work, steam and other locomotive hauled trains have not been able to run for the last two months and all movements out of the yard onto the main line have had to be made via the loop points at the other end o f the yard.
