THE WHITEHAVEN - HUDDERSFIELD AND HUDDERSFIELD - WHITEHAVEN TPOs HISTORICAL NOTES

The Whitehaven - Huddersfield and Huddersfield - Whitehaven TPOs are direct descendants of the Carnforth and Whitehaven Sorting Carriage which is shown by Post Office records to have commenced service in January 1875, but which may have operated as early as 1869. The principal operational function of the Carnforth and Whitehaven SC was to provide a connection out of the North Western Night Down TPO for destinations along the Furness Railway. The service was an out and back working from Whitehaven and this was to remain a feature of the route throughout its history.

In 1889 the service was referred to as the Carnforth and Whitehaven TPO (Night Mail Up) and the Carnforth and Whitehaven TPO (Night Nail Down). By 1914 it was known simply as the Whitehaven SC.

Whitehaven-Huddersfield TPO PostmarkOn 26 July 1926 the service was extended to and from Preston and in 1930 was redesignated the Whitehaven - Preston TPO and the Preston - Whitehaven TPO. 1939 the TPO left Whitehaven at 7 pm, arrived at Preston at 10.18 pa and returned to Whitehaven at 3.40. am where it terminated at 7 am. 2 Sc and Ts travelled Whitehaven - Preston - Whitehaven, supplemented by 1 Sc and T from Carnforth who-also made a return journey to Preston.

The TPO was suspended from September 1940 to October 1946. After the post-war resumption all staff were provided from Whitehaven, but the running times and functions remained basically the same.

On 3 January 1965 the TPO was extended to and from Stalybridge as a result of the cessation of the Liverpool - Huddersfield TPO. (The Whitehaven -Stalybridge TPO took over the connectional function from the Up Special TPO formerly provided by the Liverpool - Huddersfield). A year later, on 2 January 1966, the service was further extended to and from Huddersfield. The newly designated Whitehaven - Huddersfield and Huddersfield - Whitehaven TPOs operated from this date with little change until cessation.
