Hocking Valley Scenic Ry. Photos

Locomotives:
Ex-Lake Superior & Ishpeming 2-8-0 no. 33:

• Ex-LS&I 2-8-0 no. 33 (sister engine to WMSR no. 734, which was originally no. 34) waits at Canal Winchester for a highball.

• The 33 is seen setting inside the enginehouse on August 4th, 2001.  Occasionally, she is brought outside on the weekend for the passengers on the train.  Despite not being used for five years, she still is a beautiful locomotive!  Photo by Nathan Robinette. 

• The 33 seen setting inside the enginehouse  again on August 25th, 2001, only now with her number plate.  The addition of the plate, in my opinion, really improved the appearance of her.  Photo by Nathan Robinette.  

Ex-Chesapeake & Ohio GP7 no. 5833:

• Ex-C&O GP7 no. 5833 has been shut down for the night beside the Nelsonville Depot, connected to John Riddle's C&O caboose.

• The Geep is seen coming into the passing siding to couple onto the coaches on a rainy afternoon.

• The 1999 "Chili Train" which is the annual brush-cutting train, made up of cabooses and pulled by the 4005.

• The HVSR regular train is headed up by the "Geep" (C&O GP7 no. 5833) passing through the Nelsonville Yard heading towards Hocking College (and the Paul Bunyan Show, a lumber-related show).

• The regular train has just been shut down for the night at the [Nelsonville] Depot. The HVSR is just finishing up the Santa Trains, also indicated by the wreath on the drop-step.

Ex-United States Air Force 0-4-4-0 65-tonner no. 4005:

• Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton no. 4005 setting on the Team Track in Nelsonville.

Ex-United States Army 45-tonner no. 7315:

• GE-built 45-tonner no. 7315 (formerly no. 7318) has just pulled up to the Nelsonville Depot with the 2000 "Chili Train." She's currently in a coat of gray primer.  After a complete repaint, 7315 will be in C&O blue and yellow.

• This was a tough one to classify, as the 45-tonner and the Baldwin are both in this picture.  The 7315 can be seen better, so it's here.  The Baldwin is shoving the cabs into the team track, while the 45-tonner does some switching with the dump car.  Photo by Nathan Robinette.  

Ex-Cargill Corp. 65-tonner no. 00711:

• Whitcomb 65-tonner no. "00711" sets in the Nelsonville storage track, awaiting restoration.  This is the newest locomotive of the HVSR roster, but it's the oldest diesel.  It was built in 1944 for use over in Europe during World War II.  It was donated to the Hocking Valley Scenic by Cargill Corp., and arrived on the property by truck in February 2001.  Photo by Nathan Robinette. 
  
  

Rolling Stock:

• The only Burlington Northern flat car on the Hocking Valley Scenic is actually an ex-DODX flat.  It was captured in this photo on the storage track in Haydenville (note the cool "loaded effect" with the pallets in the background).  The annual Christmas display is normally set on top of it, and is put on the team track in front of the Nelsonville Depot. • The City of Athens is the only combination car on the entire HVSR roster.  This is ex-Baltimore & Ohio "Combine" X-4072 that was built in the 1920s(?) and was donated by Cass Scenic Railroad.  If anyone has more specific info on this car such as build date, etc., please contact me!  Photo by Nathan Robinette.

Structures Plus...:

• The Haydenville Depot (ex-HV). The Haydenville Historic Preservation Group is now doing some work on the depot! Much graffiti has either been wiped away completely or toned down considerably. Looking good!

• The ex-HV 300-ton capacity coaling tower in the Nelsonville Yard. The Paul Bunyan Show shuttle train (made up of "cabeese") and the regular train are seen passing each other beneath it.

• View of the Nelsonville Depot from President Bill Evans's Family Lines caboose.

• The circa 1999 HVSR 3-stall enginehouse in Nelsonville.  The track three (right) houses the 33 and (normally) 5833; track two (middle) is where the inspection pit will be; and track one (left) is where most restorations currently take place.  This is due to the fact that inside, track two is currently out of service due to the construction of the pit.  Photo by Josh Pack.

• Bridge 629 (62.9 miles east of the old Columbus Union Station), which is the only active double-track bridge on the HVSR.  Only two others are capable of holding a double track main, but are currently single track.  Photo by Nathan Robinette. 

• The east switch of the the passing siding in Haydenville.  The storage track and the passing siding were once the same track, but the C&O split it in the 1970s into the two sections that are currently there.  The original passing siding extended all the way from Wandling Road to the storage track switch.  Remnants of the original track can still be viewed (albeit, through weeds) in front of the Haydenville Depot.  Photo by David Robinette. 

• The old Diamond switch.  This switch was once part of the spur that went across U.S. 33 and on into General Clay Products' Diamond plant.

• Engineer Jason Oliver, (2000-2001 V.P. of Operations) inside the Baldwin (4005) at the Haydenville passing siding. The 1998 Caboose Train is in the "hole" waiting for the regular train to pass.
