(LEFT) Santa Fe 928 west passes NR Junction while the annual balloon race takes place. Normally the wind doesn't bring the balloons near the tracks. SF 928 is a Dash 8-40CW. This photo is from October 1995. (MIDDLE) Santa Fe 250 west passes the Emporia Depot during March 1996. 250 is a SD70M built by EMD. (LEFT) Santa Fe 9511 pulls the loaded westbound Redrock coal train off the Topeka Sub at NR Junction. 9511 and many others has been retired as BNSF received new engines. (RIGHT) Cimmeron Valley Railway loaned two units out to Santa Fe during late March 1996. CVR is a small shortline railroad from western Kansas and part of Oklahoma. SSW 8077 west rumbles past NR Junction at Emporia during July 1996. Santa Fe Superhoppers are being taken to the Bunge Elevator by the yard engine. There is only three sets of Superhoppers on the former Santa Fe.

 

 

 

 

 

Frisco 1522 stops at NR Junction at Emporia to throw the switch to the Topeka subdivision to go to Topeka Railroad Days. Frisco 1522 accelerates up to speed as it enters the Topeka Sub. Frisco made this appearance in September 1996. Photos by Eric Burris.

 

 

 

 

 

 

During October 1996 Santa Fe 209 west blast through the snow, called the "October Surprise". Santa Fe 672 west passes milepost 112 at Emporia during late 1996. 672 is a Dash 9-44CW.
