NEW!! Information on Superliner Cross-Country Cafe Car Conversions

Amtrak is in the process of converting wreck-damaged, surplussed, or ortherwise-stored Superliner I Dining Cars into Cross-Country Cafe Cars that combine dining and lounge car services, similer to the Diner/Lounge/Bistro cars operated on San Joaquin and Capitol Corridor Trains and the Diner/Bistro Car sets used on Talgo trains in the Pacific Northwest. At this point, Amtrak has converted sixteen of these cars into combined Diner/Lounges at their service facilities in Beech Grove, Indiana, south of Indianapolis. When this project, which began in mid-fall 2006 is completed, there will be a total of 18 Cross Country Cafes. These conversions are being constructed as part of a governmental mandate to bring in more revenue on food service operations aboard long distance trains. In fairness to the City of New Orleans, Texas Eagle, and Sunset Limited, on which this type of car is both used and assigned, and referred to as a Cross-Country Cafe in the Amtrak Arrow Reservation system, chapter G/TVL/MNU/P2 Effective 12DEC07.
On this web page, the Menu Name "Cross Country Cafe" is used in place of the name Diner/Lounge. Car Numbers in Bold-Italic type indicate cars that have been upgraded to operate in push-pull corridors such as the San Joaquins and Amtrak Cascades. Information used to prepare this page is also derived from On-Track-On-Line by David C. Warner. - Used by Permission.

Cells higlighted in Yellow indicate car was upgraded to train-line status, with the multiple-unit run-through cabling, that permits the cars to be used in corridor service routes such as Amtrak Cascades Service or Pacific Surfliners.

The text in the cells that have car numbers that have been modified to operate in push-pull operation are in black. All other cars = in the=20 list are blue text on a white background.
