GENERAL: Amtrak's baggage & mail handling cars used systemwide on nearly all Long-Distance trains.
|

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: These cars were given to Amtrak at its start back in 1971 and came from several railroads. In the mid-1990's, Amtrak began a program to convert older Heritage Coaches into Baggage Cars by covering over the windows, gutting the car interior and placing a center sliding door on the car.

||||
NOTES: You will find 1 to 2 of these cars on most Long-Distance trains. Some of these cars are specially equipped to handle the transport of bicycles without a separate bicycle box. Some are fitted to just handle mail only or just baggage only. |
