SP SD45R 7427

This amazing model was created by club member Paul Ellis it started out long ago as an RPP SD45 shell. All of the hood doors, cab, nose, sub-base, exhaust stack, inertial hatch, inertial intakes, fans, and hood end are Cannon parts. The battery box doors are modified Cannon doors (louvers added), in order to better represent the GRIP doors the SD45R rebuilds received (today Paul would use the equivalent parts recently released by Hi-Tech Details). The pilots/stepwells on the original RPP shell were too thick and crude, so Paul replaced them with stepwell/pilot assemblies cut from an Athearn GP40-2 shell, with etched steps by A-Line. Unhappy with the stock grills, he made his own replacements from S&S etched locomotive grill material, with sub-screening made from Scale Scenics grill material, and radiator shutters simulated with clapboard siding by Evergreen styrene.
Misc. details were added, including treadplate from S&S Hobbies, a cab interior kit from Keystone Locomotive Works, and crew figures by Preiser. The shell rides upon a modified Overland SD45 chassis. It is more-or-less done; it still needs a decoder and lighting added, along with a few minor details (handrail safety chains, spare knuckles, windshield wiper connector "bar"). The model was lightly weathered with oil paint washes, and light soot and truck dust from an airbrush. This project was started quite a few years ago. When Paul get around to building more SD45Rs, he will start with the P2K SD45 kit. He has a small stack of them stored away for those future projects; just needs to find the time.
