The Logo

Hans van der Splinter visited Eritrea in June of 2000.  (Yes. The war was going on.)  I can't say he felt safer than in Amsterdam.  I am fairly sure he felt safer than riding the No. 7 Subway with John Rocker.

Anyway, he was kind enough to take a straight on picture of the current logo on the side of one of the passenger cars.  Hens, I was able to get an accurate rendering of it using Micrographix Picture Publisher.  Thanks, Hans!

This logo was used in the late '50s and shows up on a few of Charles S. Small's pictures in Far Wheels II.  In particular, the double header at Mai Atal.

I will leave the banner for a few days...until about July 10.  So, people will be able to see the difference.  I will correct the banner's graphic, but keep the colors.  I think it will help remind people that I am not speaking on behalf of the Eritrean Railway.  I am only speaking my opinions about it.

I have been able to extract the logo from two of these names:

The above came from the Littorina picture provided by Francesco Quaglio.  The picture was taken in September of 1939. Here, the initials F.E. are surrounded by stylized fasces. Originally, I had identified these as cactus.  Thanks to Renato Gaudio for correcting me.

I have attempted to render the logo here.  The type faces may be a little too wide.  The fasces were derived from a highway tunnel photograph in a book about Kagnew Station.

When Renato Gaudio sent me a picture of three Littorine at Ghinda Station, the logo was different:

I decided it was either a stylized 'f' superimposed over a block 'E':

Or, a block 'F' super imosed over a block 'E':

I have not been able to find a picture clear enough to make up my mind.  Anyone who knows is welcome to provide me the information.  Just click on the mailbox below.

The above came from a gondola picture provided by Chuck Moulton.  It has a logo and Ethiopic letters.  The balance of the writting is not clear enough for me to recognize.  However, it looks like it may have been Arabic.  This would be consistent with the lettering on the stations.

During Chuck's watch, Frederick C. Gamst wrote and article for Trains Magazine where he called the the line "Imperial Ethiopian Government Railroad" or IEGRR.  This does not seem to fit the lettering on Chuck's gondola.
