Hagerstown Roundhouse Virtual Tour - North Erecting Shop

The north erecting shop houses two 15-ton overhead cranes which were used in locomotive building and repair. Locomotives were assembled here then rolled out to the turntable.

To the right, out the doors, is the transfer table. This works like a turntable, but it rolls sideways instead of spinning around. A locomotive or car would go out the door and onto a piece of track that could move sideways until it lined up with another door in this building, or across the way in the south erecting shop. You can get a view of the transfer area.

Straight ahead out the end of the building is the proposed area for the Museum in the warehouse.

One saving feature in the construction on this site was the use of structural steel and non-load bearing walls. Some drastic looking structures are really much more intact than they appear, and essentially need cosmetic work, if we act quickly.
