"WNYRHS Public Meeting - 5/19/22

Our May program will be presented by society member Geno Dailey covering a cross-country Amtrak trip he completed in the Fall of 2019 riding a total of five Amtrak trains! Among this trips highlights, we will take the Lake Shore Limited from Buffalo to visit Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, OH, then the Lake Shore again to Chicago to go railfanning at Roosevelt Road featuring Amtrak and Metra commuter trains as well as the famous Willis Tower before taking the "long way" to get to Flagstaff, AZ. We'll see photos riding over the Mississippi River and the canyons of Colorado through the Rocky Mountains as well as the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the California Zephyr, one of Amtrak's most scenic routes! We'll then take a trip riding along the west coast to Los Angeles on the Coast Starlight, before heading east to Flagstaff on the Southwest Chief.

Once in the Grand Canyon State, we will head over to nearby Williams, AZ to take two roundtrips on one of the finest tourist railroads in the country, the Grand Canyon Railway! The first trip will be in a full-length Budd Dome Car and the second in the GCRY's Luxury Parlor Car which features an open platform on the end. Taking a trip in both cars will allow you to see this historic railroad from two distinctly different photo angles! Once at the Grand Canyon, we will see photos from Hopi Point, Mohave Point as well as near the Grand Canyon Village along with a little nature photography thrown in as well. We'll also make a quick stop on Historic Route 66 over to Winslow, AZ and see a couple trains as well as a roadside attraction that is the story of a certain song from The Eagles! This program is another great story about America that you definitely will not want to miss!

Hope to see you all next Thursday at the meeting!

Welcome to the
Heritage DiscoveRY Center
100 Lee Street, Buffalo, New York, 14210

The Heritage DiscoveRy Center provides the Buffalo and Niagara Frontier with a unique cultural attraction to showcase the rich railroad, marine and industrial heritage of the region. Our goal has been to create a regional attraction to capitalize on our proximity to Harbor Center, RiverBend, Canalside and Silo City to enhance an already growing and prosperous tourism market by encouraging extended-stay tourism in the Buffalo Niagara Region.

Our dynamic museum development will creates a premier location here in Western New York to celebrate the rich industrial heritage of our region. The museum offers interactive, educational opportunities for young and old by providing a center of learning about railroad, steel, industrial and maritime history. Nearly 80% of our region’s population can trace family ties to the railroad, steel making or shipping at some point in their family history.

Ethnic diversity and community pride are on display and demonstrated through ongoing study and exhibitions focused on the thousands of workers once employed by the railroads, steel plants and the Buffalo harbor. Our ancestors contibuted to the growth and economic development of Western New York and the nation.

In addition to the ‘‘Western New York Railway Historical Society Inc.,’’ the Heritage DiscoveRy Center has become home to the ‘‘Steel Plant Museum of Western New York’’, ‘‘The Nickel Plate Road Historical & Technical Society, Inc.,’’ ‘‘The Erie Lackawanna Historical Society, Inc.,’’ ‘‘The Buffalo Lighthouse Association,’’ the ‘‘Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society.’’ and ‘‘The Buffalo Geological Society.’’

Thank you for your visit and please take some time to see all we have accomplished in eleven years. The Heritage DiscoveRy Center is open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays from 10:00am - 4:00pm where you can browse at your leisure or a volunteer can guide you through our many exhibits.
