September - 2023

Heritage DiscoveRY Center, "Fall Car Show 2023"

On Saturday, September 30th, we hosted our 3rd Annual "Fall Car Show" at the Heritage DiscoveRY Center located at 100 Lee Street in Buffalo. We had over 140 show cars, although it's hard to get any more accurate than that, as some cars leave early, and others come late. Last year we had just over 100. All makes and models of cars & trucks were on display. There was no registration fee, but donations to the museum were greatfully accepted. Hot dogs, pop, water, condiments and 50/50 Split Club tickets were available.

Many members from our Williamsville Depot crew showed up to assist. On hand were Art and Sandy Toale, Devan Lawton, Lucy McCabe, Marty and Kathy Visciano, Paul Randell, Carol Mancuso, Jim Gondek, and Lori Gondek.

Thanks also to HDC personel who helped with the event. Joe and Steve Kocsis, Barb and Don Owens and Paul Mayer. And a special shout out goes to our Williamsville Depot recording secretary, Paul Randall for organizing this event, Thank you All!

A Disc Jocky supplied music all afternoon and there were plenty of displays both inside and outside the museum to view. The weather was perfect and a final thanks to Joe Kocsis for his great photos below.

Thursday, September 21st, 2023 Public Meeting - After a brief business meeting, Founding Trustee Devan Lawton will present a program detailing his 3200 mile trip from Buffalo to the West Coast 52 years ago in September 1971 on board the famous "Flying Scotsman."

In 1969, a uniquely British steam locomotive named the Flying Scotsman began an epic tour across the US and Canada. After winter storage in Toronto, the 4-6-2 Pacific Type steam locomotive came to Buffalo in the summer of 1971. This is where Devan’s story begins. Devan, along with Peter Gores and Gary Youngberg volunteered to assist the train crew on their 3200-mile excursion across America.

Built in 1923 for the London & North Eastern Railway, the locomotive is celebrating its 100th Anniversary and is still running excursion trains across the UK. Devan’s program will detail the trip from Buffalo to Oroville, CA traveling across the Norfolk & Western, Elgin, Joliet & Eastern, Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Northern Pacific, Great Northern, Spokane, Portland & Seattle and Western Pacific Railroads

Doors open at 6:00pm, with the meeting starting at 7:00pm. The Railroad and Steel Plant Museums will be open before, during, and after the meeting. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted!
