Subsequent owners

CPR slowly began selling off old yard diesels as their age peaked. At first it was Alco and MLW units of only 660 HP
and later 1000 HP. No longer manufactured and in the case of 99 ton 660 HP units, too small for heavier freight cars.
These yard diesels went primarily to industries wanting their own plant switcher.

Later, Montreal commuter operations acquired their own diesels for the first time. Sold 10/01/1982: 7 GMD A units
These were all re-sold to various short line and tourist trains as "covered wagons" are considered very desireable.

VIA Rail Canada was created to take over passenger trains and 9/28/1978 CPR sold 20 A, 5 B and 2 E units all GM.
In addition, one MLW RS-10 passenger unit due to lack of sufficient GM passenger units to meet VIA's needs.

Many diesels have been retired and sold off in recent years primarily four axle road switchers that had been part of the extensive remanufacturing project begun in 1980 and carried out at CP's main shops, Angus, Ogden and Weston.
